Requirements for U.S. Teachers:
Traveling to Honduras requires three things:
1.You must be a lisenced teacher teaching. We have had Music, P.E., Art, Spanish, Kindergarten, and regular classroom teachers participate.
2.A love of travel, or at least willingness for adventure and excitement.
3.Participation in meetings and HETO functions. A detailed calendar will be given to you at the first meeting.
Above all, traveling teachers must be ready to embrace the Honduran culture and life. We travel to Honduras not only to share our ideas and knowledge, but also learn from the Honduran educators.
For Teachers
Upon Return…
Upon returning to your Indianapolis classroom, you will want to talk all about your trip, the experiences, what you learned, saw, ate, smelled, and how much fun you had. It is the aim of HETO that your trip is a central part of your classroom, that your students experience your adventure along with you. It is our hope that you incorporate as much as possible into your daily curriculum.
Be advised that it may take a week or two for you to fully decompress and absorb all that you experienced in Honduras. Re-entry can be rough, so take your time and as slowly as possible get back into your schedule.
One teacher has started a high school group at Zionsville High School called Operation: Honduras. Since beginning in March of 2008, they have put on a “Coffee House” fundraiser to raise money for one special Honduran teacher, collect hundreds of shoes for boys at Flor Azul and are raising money for HETO. This is just one example of ways in which to carry on your experience in Honduras.
Many teachers chose to help the traveling teachers simply by collecting school supplies in their classroom and providing support in financial means. It is important that you do what you are capable and will be meaningful to you!!
